Addendum, Window Sticker, or Buyers Guide — Which Document Does What

Three different jobs share glass space on most vehicles. The Buyers Guide is the one federal law requires — it discloses warranty status under the FTC’s Used Car Rule and has to be on every used vehicle offered for sale. The window sticker is a dealer-created summary of price, specs, and features, following Monroney-label convention without a matching legal requirement for used vehicles. The addendum is the flexible piece: it exists specifically to disclose whatever the other two don’t cover on a particular vehicle, without altering either of them.

When Dealers Choose to Add One

The most common reason is itemizing something vehicle-specific: a dealer-installed accessory, an extended service contract, a documentation or prep fee your state requires to be disclosed on the vehicle itself rather than only in the contract. Some dealerships also use an addendum for state-mandated notices beyond the federal baseline — the exact list varies by state, so confirm your requirements with compliance counsel rather than assuming ours covers it by default. Because addendums are smaller and cheaper per unit than a full window sticker (see pricing below), they’re the practical choice when only one line item needs disclosing, not a full second label.
